Viewing Guide

The very first step on your journey to buying property in France is putting pen to paper! Think about why you want to purchase overseas, and what benefits you are looking to achieve.

Once you know exactly what you are looking for, you can be more specific – what type of property do you want? How many bathrooms do you need? Do you want a garden? A swimming pool? Do you intend to rent the property out? Your dreams and intentions may change, but organising your initial thoughts is the best place to start – especially if you are buying with a family member; you need to make sure you want the same things!

When you have organised your initial thoughts, you can think about your budget, and research information from a variety of sources. This will all place you in a much better position to accurately set an objective. The more time you spend thinking about what you really want and need, why you want it and when you want to achieve it, the easier it will be to reach your goal. More often than not, the people who set out on this journey not knowing what they want are the ones who end up getting something that is not really ‘perfect’, if they get anything at all! With a bit of time daydreaming and writing down your thoughts, you will set yourself up for a better outcome than if you just ‘wing it’!

We would recommend writing a list of all the reasons you are looking to move overseas; perhaps something along the lines of the following:

I would like to buy property in France because:
  • I want somewhere to visit that improves my quality of life, somewhere I can go to enjoy more space, more sun and warmer weather, better food and less hustle and bustle
  • I want somewhere I can go to enjoy memorable holidays with family and friends
  • I’ve always wanted to live in France and I don’t want to get to a point where I look back on my life, never having made the move and always regretting it
